The Skirball Rallies Community Partners to Participate in Be the Change: A Jewishly Inspired Public Art Movement on View at Plummer Park (June 15–October 1, 2023)

The Nature Nexus Institute Art Team was thrilled to be part of the Skirball Cultural Center’s first-ever public art installation in the City of West Hollywood. The exhibit is on view from June 15 through October 1, 2023 at Plummer Park in West Hollywood. Be the Change: A Jewishly Inspired Public Art Movement is an art and activism initiative inspired by the pursuit of justice—a value essential to Jewish life. Part of a national initiative, the public art project is a concept originally developed by the Jewish Arts Collaborative (J Arts) in Boston, Massachusetts, with the Skirball spearheading the creation of site-specific works for Southern California.

As the Southern California–based producer of Be the Change, the Skirball identified Nature Nexus Institute as one of five community partners who in turn have collaborated with a wide range of artists to create works that illuminate issues of injustice and encourage community members to become agents of change. NNI is honored to be in community with Holocaust Museum LA, LA vs. Hate, Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, and Pico Union Project.

Big thank-you to Jewish Arts Collaborative for featuring NNI’s art piece on Kolture! Learn more about NNI’s piece HERE and the other artists involved in the Be the Change project HERE.

Baldwin Hills Parklands Community Connection: Habitat Restoration and Climate Resiliency

Today, Vice President Harris announced that the Department of Commerce has recommended $22.5 million for projects across southern California to make communities and the economy more resilient to climate change, as part of the Investing in America agenda.  Across southern California, seven projects will create jobs and boost economic and environmental outcomes for coastal communities. The awards are made under the Biden Administration’s Climate-Ready Coasts initiative funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) with additional funds leveraged from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

These projects are part of NOAA’s nearly $6 billion total investment under BIL and IRA.

As one of seven southern California groups recommended for this grant, Nature Nexus Institute will engage community members in South Los Angeles in habitat restoration through nature hikes, field trips, workshops, and hands-on restoration activities. They will restore habitat at two parks in the Baldwin Hills—Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook State Park and Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area—that are the closest no-cost, open-space recreational areas available to local residents.
