2025 Funding Challenge

Nature Nexus Institute is facing a challenging year with the uncertainty of Federal funding which has been a key resource in supporting our environmental education programs. What does this mean for Los Angeles youth and community members who are already reeling from devastating fires?

Nature Nexus Institute (NNI) programs are vital for managing native habitat in one of the few remaining open spaces in Los Angeles. Our programs strive to provide equitable access to nature for youth and community members via actionable hands-on activities that include weekly/monthly habitat restoration aimed at promoting climate resiliency, reducing wildfire risk, and improving community health.

NNI programs also provide social/emotional/stress reducing activities such as bird watching, nature sketching, and nature walks. Self-care is so important especially during these stressful times of uncertainty.

NNI’s after-school internship program aims to grow the next generation of environmental leaders who will become urban planners, scientists, biologists, educators and community leaders.

These programs are vital for Los Angeles youth and the community. Without Federal funds, our ability to operate at 100% is greatly impacted. Please donate now to ensure that NNI programs continue to inspire youth and provide pathways to future careers in the fields of science, biology, conservation, education, and environmental stewardship.

Nature Nexus Institute directly engages approximately 5,000 people each year - students and community members from the Los Angeles area. We are co-leading community habitat restoration with CA State Parks at the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook, a 58-acre ecological island in the midst of urban Los Angeles. High school and college interns participate in weekly environmental activities, learn about urban ecology, cultivate native plants and gain work experience as restoration leaders and environmental community advocates. NNI staff also lead the Conservation Studies Program at West Los Angeles College, adjacent to the park.

Now more than ever, we need funding support from Foundations, Corporations, and community members to maintain and expand these important education/conservation programs that aim for a more sustainable and climate resilient future for Los Angeles.
