New Collaboration!

We are excited to become an official partner of California State Parks Foundation's volunteer program at Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook State Park. To celebrate this exciting partnership, the two organizations are hosting the first in an ongoing series of monthly habitat restoration events on March 18, 2023.

Nature Nexus Institute (NNI) is thrilled to have the support of California State Parks Foundation (CSPF), which will boost volunteer outreach efforts and build upon NNI's staff and student interns' stewardship commitment at the park. Over the last year, Nature Nexus has led small volunteer groups in everything from weeding invasive species, planting native plants, and learning how to collect and germinate seeds. NNI is committed to connecting students and community members to their local nature through science, art, and stewardship opportunities, and this new collaboration with CSPF strengthens those efforts.

“Having the support and network of California State Parks Foundation behind our own efforts is going to accelerate what we can do for this natural oasis in the middle of Los Angeles,” said NNI Executive Director, Stacey Vigallon. “If you’ve ever driven by the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook or walked up the stairs you’ve seen the hard work of our staff, students, and committed volunteers in maintaining a vital habitat. This will boost our efforts.”

NNI staff and students operate and maintain two greenhouses in the Baldwin Hills Parklands, growing native plants used in the restoration activities. NNI's internship program provides environmental education and job experience to a diverse group of high school and college students from Dorsey High School, Culver City High School, West Los Angeles College, and more.

California State Parks Foundation plans over 100 volunteer workdays each year in state parks across California. No previous experience is needed to participate – all tools and training will be provided. To sign up for upcoming events, visit www.calparks.org/volunteer.
